Wake-up call

Sir, — Harish Khare has proved the Abdullahs disloyal (June 26). The election in Jammu and Kashmir is a wake-up call for New Delhi. The question New Delhi should ask itself is: "How can a democratic process be called `free and fair' when there is no proper representation of the people at the end"?

It should try and involve the separatists in the electoral process. It can try some confidence building measures, such as a unilateral ceasefire and a promise of reasonable autonomy.

Before the election, the Army should slow down its operations, except against Pakistani terrorists. International organisations should be allowed to monitor the election.

Ch.V. Krishnamohan,
Visakhapatnam, A.P.
