Tamil Nadu dominates

KOLKATA JULY 5. Tamil Nadu dominated the races in both the boys' and the girls' events in the fifth sub-junior National rowing at the Lake Club here on the second and final day of the round-robin league stage on Friday.

In a much improved performance from the last year, Tamil Nadu boys and girls rose above the rest of the field to qualify for the semifinals in seven out of the eight events in the sub-junior category.

Tamil Nadu did the best in the girls' section as both its A and B teams booked knock-out berths in the girls' sculls, double sculls, pairs and coxed fours events.

In the knock-out semifinals, Tamil Nadu is expected to face a tough challenge from host Bengal whose teams qualified in three out of the four categories. It will be a straight contest in the girls' fours where Tamil Nadu and Bengal share the four berths seeing both their A and B teams qualifying. Maharashtra and Manipur figure in the rest of the contests.

Tamil Nadu boys too excelled in their show of technique and strength to move into three — single scull, double sculls and coxed fours — out of the four semifinals.

Tamil Nadu boys, who have tied with Bengal A and Kerala with two wins and loss each in group B of the pairs event, have the chance to complete their state's presence in all the sub-junior events if they win the tie-breakers scheduled in the morning prior to the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Host Bengal too did well in the league phase and has ensured its teams figure in all the four semifinals. With Kerala and Karnataka joining in, the contests in the boys' semifinals promise to be close one. In the seventh edition of open sprint (500 metre) nationals, the men's elite category continued to be dominated by Services rowers, who won all the races to qualify to the title rounds in the double sculls, pairs and fours events.
