Abandika shocks Aparna

CHENNAI JULY 5 . Assam is being represented in a big way in the Krishna Khaitan memorial junior badminton tournament this time and the impact is visible. On Friday at the Nehru indoor stadium unseeded Abandika Deka shocked the second seed and National champion Aparna Balan of Kerala in three well-contested games to take a quarterfinal berth in the under-16 girls' section.

Aparna slipped badly in the first game but clawed back to restore parity but could not sustain the tempo in the decider.

There was flutter in the junior girls section also when the third and fourth seeds B.N. Aswini and Shalini Prakash, both from Karnataka were ousted. While in the under-10 section, the top seeded Tejas Saha of Gujarat was shown the exit by unseeded Harinath Joth Neogi of Assam in the pre-quarterfinal round.

For host Tamil Nadu C.R. Manikandan in the under-10 section kept his hopes alive with a gritty three-game win over Anirudh Thakkar of MP while in the under-16 section, R. Vijayanand had a comfortable passage into the quarterfinal.
