Ismail, a local money-lender, and his son had returned to their house in the village only on Thursday. As the house was damaged in the riots, they were asleep inside a makeshift tent outside the house when a group of people lynched them. The attackers were apparently the local Vasavas, a tribal community, who had a grudge against the Muslim money-lenders for their alleged exploitation. The district authorities said the two were threatened with dire consequences following the riot in the village on March 7 when a member of the Vasava community was killed in police firing. The entire family of Ismail Mansuri had since then been living with their relatives and had returned to the village to see the condition of their house. Due to rains, they stayed back for the night when their presence was noticed. About three days ago, Ismail had approached the Dabhoi police for protection to go to his village but was reportedly advised against it because the situation was not conducive for the family. A senior district official claimed that five other Muslim families were already living in the village but had faced no problem.
