Drama on court No. 1

London July 5. A dramatic series of events were witnessed on the No. 1 court at Wimbledon where David Nalbandian of Argentina was playing Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the other men's semifinal. From the second game of the first set it was obvious that Malisse was in some sort of physical discomfort.

He was constantly pointing to his chest and even thumping it. The trainer was called out once and then the doctor arrived after Malisse had lost the chance to serve out the set in the 10th game and then the first set on the tie-break. As Nalbandian sat in his chair, Malisse disappeared with the doctor and there was no sign of him returning for more than 10 minutes. The agitated Argentine now and again checked with the chair umpire Pascal Maria of France as to what was happening. For this was much longer than the normal medical time out, which is three minutes. As it turned out, the doctor needed time to make a complete check up and rule out any heart problem. It appears that Malisse had a respiratory problem and experienced shortness of breath. When rain stopped play, Nalbandian was leading 7-6, 4-2.
