The NGOs had maintained that the earlier price band of Rs. 450 (floor) to Rs. 550 (ceiling) was too high for a service that was primarily launched to provide affordable means of communication to the common man. According to the Common Cause Director, H.D. Shourie, "it is heartening to see the new tariff plan by the regulator which goes in favour of the consumer." "We are appreciative of the Government for taking into consideration the plight of the common man and providing him with desirable mobility at affordable prices.'' "It is an encouraging sign for the consumer, who till now, has always been given second preference as this decision by TRAI will change the outlook of the consumer. Now it is hoped that the Supreme Court will also clear the way for the launch of this much-needed service,'' said Shailendra Singh of Janadahar.
