This is the first time in six years that sales have fallen but PC shipments in the current fiscal are predicted to increase by 13 per cent. However, sales are unlikely to touch the figures registered in 2000-01, according to the Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), which has been collating figures for IT hardware sales since 1996-97 and claims that its assessments have always been close to the actual figures. Analysing the data for 2001-02, MAIT had found that the first half was particularly `calamitous' for the IT hardware sector.
The situation improved with a slight pick-up in sales in the second half. Dividing the IT hardware segment into several sections, the study found that in the `computer' category, all the three elements desktops, notebooks and servers had shown two digit decreases in sales. In the second category, all types of printers sold less than in 2000-01 although the decline was very marginal in the case of ink-jet printers.
