Hyderabad monsoon season from July 22

HYDERABAD JULY 6. The Hyderabad monsoon season, which gets under way on July 22 and ends on October 27 with the Golconda St. Leger, will have total stake money of Rs.3,08,54,000, in addition to trophies valued at Rs.6,57,000. The prize money amount may increase with division of races.

The prime attraction of the season will be The Hindu Deccan Derby, scheduled on October 2 and sponsored by The Hindu group of publications, Chennai.

About 60 jockeys, including 26 apprentices, 16 A-licensed trainers and 10 B licence-holders will be in the fray for the 28-meeting season. More than 430 horses will come under the starter's orders, in addition to 190 two-year olds, which will begin their careers in winter.

In comparison to the last monsoon season, there is a marginal increase in stake money, while there is no significant hike from the winter season purses. S.S.F. Hassan will make an entry into the field of training and is the lone newcomer.

The number of horses for a division has been raised from the existing 16 to 18. S. N. Chavan from Mumbai will ride for Deshmukh's stable and I. Chisty for Donald Netto. Jockey A. Imran Khan is to join Anant Vatsalya's stable.

Trainer Laxman Singh will be missed this season, since he has surrendered his training licence.

Appu as usual will ride Mr. S. Rangarajan's wards, while Amyn Merchant and Kariappa will don the silks of Dr. M. A. M. Ramaswamy's horses. Jockey K. Suresh, who has recovered from last year's injury, will freelance. The Hyderabad Race Club has decided to adopt the rating system as prevalent in other centres and will rate horses on a `0 and over' basis.

This will make things extremely easy for owners, punters and professionals to understand the system besides making comparisons with horses of various centres better.

The HRC has installed a running horse simulator for the apprentices and jockeys to improve their riding skills and the finer aspects of race riding. A new photo finish system, which is digital and gives instant results was installed and tested on Saturday morning.

The other racing days are July 29; August 3, 4, 10, 11, 15, 17 (the Nizam's Gold Cup), 18 (the A. P. Governor's Cup), 24 and 25 (the Deccan Bookmakers Association Fillies Trial Stakes); September 1 (the Deccan Bookmakers Association Colts Trial Stakes), 7 (the Melbourne Racing Club Trophy), 8 (the President Of India Gold Cup), 14, 15 (the A. P. Chief Minister's Cup) 21, 22, 28 and 29, October 6, 12,14,19,21 and 26.
