Use of stamp paper to be banned

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE JULY 6. The Karnataka Government has decided to ban the use of stamp paper for registration of documents, including those related to property. To end the menace of fake stamp papers, the Cabinet took this decision at its meeting here on Saturday.

Briefing presspersons, the Minister for Information, Kagodu Thimmappa, said the State Government would request the Centre to amend the Stamps and Registration Act to accord legal status to documents registered on plain paper. The Government was already encouraging registration of documents on plain paper on payment of stamp duty, he added.

The Bangalore City Police busted a fake stamp paper racket involving crores of rupees a year ago. Following this, the Opposition parties demanded the resignation of Roshan Baig from the Cabinet for his alleged connivance with his brother, who is said to have links with the kingpin of the racket.

NGEF to be closed down

Mr. Thimmappa said the Government took the final decision on closing down the NGEF which was once the "jewel" among the State's public sector enterprises.

He said the Cabinet decided to wind it up and offer voluntary retirement scheme to all its 1,000 employees, including those who were on deputation to other units. The Government made a vain attempt to privatise the premier enterprise by floating global tenders, but there were no takers.

Mr. Thimmappa said the Government would grant 100 acres of land to the software major, Infosys Technologies, on Sarjapur Road to establish its software development unit with an investment of Rs.618 crores. The CISCO Systems has been allotted 30 acres of land near the Electronics City to set up its unit with an investment of Rs.1,305 crores.

Fresh recruitment

The Cabinet decided to go in for fresh recruitment of police constables and cancel the recruitment of 750 candidates who were already selected.

This was because of widespread complaints, including alleged irregularities, against the recruitment procedure.

It had been decided to reconstitute the recruitment committee for fresh recruitment.
