Hockey
By Our Sports Reporter
After the International Hockey Federation (FIH) had revised the rules for the qualification to the Games one country per continent and the finalists of the previous edition India was edged out by Pakistan from Asia. However, now, there are indications that India could figure in the hockey competition, to be held from July 26 to August 4, if the Caribbean representative, Jamaica, pulls out. "We are waiting for a confirmation from the Commonwealth Games organisers. If the Caribbean country withdraws from the competition, our men's hockey team will definitely have a chance to play,'' said the Secretary-General of the Indian Olympic Association, Randhir Singh. The FIH, has in principle, agreed that if one slot is vacated then India will get the chance. "We hope that the scene will become clearer by Monday or Tuesday,'' Mr. Randhir Singh, who is also a Vice President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, added. Meanwhile, the IOA is awaiting Union Government clearance for the 167-member contingent for the Games. It has submitted a list of 114 sportspersons, 20 coaches and 17 officials and eight medicos and technical officials each.
