BJP describes conditions for contestants as `unfair'

New Delhi July 6. The BJP today said it would be `unfair' for political parties to bar candidates from contesting elections if they did not provide the Election Commission with details regarding their assets and criminal antecedents.

Commenting on the Supreme Court directive to the Commission in this regard, the party spokesman, V.K. Malhotra. said ``the directions by the Election Commission would mean that most of the candidates belonging to political parties would not be able to contest elections and this was not fair.''

Mr. Malhotra and the party spokesman Arun Jaitley, who would be meeting the Law Minister, Jana Krishnamurthi, as the party representatives ahead of an all-party meeting on Monday said these directions need to be reviewed and appropriate changes made as ``it appears to be rather unfair on political parties.'' On declaration of assets by candidates contesting elections, he said, ``the declaration of assets should be made after the person is elected and why should assets including those of the family members of the candidates be declared before the candidate enters the electoral fray.''
