Criminal lawyer shot dead

By S.Shivakumar

CHENNAI July 6. A leading criminal lawyer was shot dead from point blank range in the crowded Pondy Bazaar area of T.Nagar here, very close to a police station, at about 8.30 p.m. today.

Madanagopal, 45, of Alandur was getting into his car, along with his family, after shopping, when the assailant opened fire and escaped.

He sustained injuries in the back of his head and was rushed to Government Royappetah Hospital, where he was declared dead.

His daughter Aarthi, a standard X student, still in a state of shock, said, ``I was standing next to my mother when I heard the gunshot. Only when my father fell down, did I realise that he was shot. The culprit escaped in the crowd''.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had appeared in many narcotic control cases.
