SC to decide jurisdiction

New Delhi July 8. To decide matters pertaining to the jurisdiction of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Supreme Court today transferred to itself two petitions from Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, on the recent communal riots and the manner of arrest of the DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi, respectively.

As the Solicitor General, Harish Salve, agreed that there was a substantive question of law involved and the matters be transferred to the Apex Court, a three-judge Bench, comprising the Chief Justice B.N. Kirpal, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice Arijit Pasayat, transferred the pleas pending in Gujarat and Madras High Courts to itself.
