T.N. Govt. firm on boycotting Cauvery meet

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI July 9. With the Cauvery crisis yet to blow over, the Tamil Nadu Government has formally conveyed to the Centre the State Cabinet's decision to boycott the Cauvery River Authority headed by the Prime Minister.

Amid reports of the Prime Minister planning to convene the Authority to sort out the water sharing conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, a highly-placed source here said the State Government was firm on boycott of the Cauvery Authority and the monitoring committee.

A copy of the Cabinet resolution on pulling out of the ``powerless'' authority headed by the Prime Minister and comprising the Chief Ministers of the four riparian States had been despatched recently, the source said. The Government would also file a petition before the Supreme Court soon for a direction to Karnataka to implement the interim award of the Cauvery Tribunal.

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet recently resolved to withdraw from the meetings of the authority and the committee as it claimed that they had failed to persuade Karnataka to release Cauvery water due to the State as per the interim award of the Cauvery Tribunal.

The Mettur reservoir has received just about 2.28 tmc ft of water from Karnataka between June and July 8 as against the stipulated quantum of 23.53 tmc ft.

The delta districts in Tamil Nadu have been forced to restrict the short term Kuruvai cultivation to just 1 lakh acres as against the normal spread of 3 lakh acres due to non-release water by Karnataka.

Meanwhile, the PWD Minister, O.Paneerselvam, and the Local Administration Minister, C.Durairaj, today held a meeting at the Secretariat today to review the implementation of relief measures for agricultural labourers in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, who have been left jobless because of the non-cultivation of the Kuruvai paddy crop in several areas in the delta region.
