Letters to the Editor
Sir, You have perspicuously highlighted the Government's procrastination in implementing the Supreme Court judgment on electoral reforms in your Editorial `Knowing your candidate' (July 4). When the legislature and the executive show dereliction of duty, there is nothing amiss on the part of the judiciary to intervene. It is preposterous to expect action from the NDA Government on reforms that are detrimental to its self- serving interest. Any sensible man who speaks of value-based politics, right to recall of legislative members and transparency in administration will be shown the door. The court emphasis on voters knowing more about candidates is laudable. ``Before making a choice of electing law-breakers as law-makers'' is purple silverlining. As you have mentioned, when the election panel and the judiciary have enormous power, they need not wait and fritter away time to perform their duty in the best interest of democracy. The Election Commission can take unilateral action to prevent hardcore criminals from entering politics and fouling the game.
