The victory is significant because it shows that the recent communal disturbances, which had engulfed the region, may not create an impact on the voting pattern to the extent expected by the ruling BJP. Meanwhile, the State Congress president, Amarsinh Chaudhary, said the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, would try to hold the Assembly elections by October. At a meeting of the district panchayat and Congress committee presidents and other office-bearers here today, Mr. Chaudhary said he had information that immediately after the presidential elections, Mr. Modi would recommend the dissolution of the Assembly and hold elections by October. He advised partymen to remain vigilant because of the apprehension that Mr. Modi and the BJP would misuse the State administration to tamper with the electoral rolls to deny voting rights to pro-Congress elements.
