Delimitation commission

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 12. The Centre today announced the constitution of a delimitation commission under the chairmanship of retired Judge of the Supreme Court, Kuldip Singh. The other members are the Election Commissioner, B.B. Tandon and the Election Commissioners of the States and the Union Territories concerned.

The main task of the commission would be to readjust the territorial constituencies for both the Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies on the basis of the census figures, without affecting the total number of seats allocated to each State in the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly. Its other task would be to refix the seats for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies, again on the basis of the census figures. The panel has been given two years to complete its work.
