By Our Sports Reporter
Launched by the Himalayan Rally Association (HRA), Mumbai, the rally tournament is being billed as a candidate event for the 2003 Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). The Bangalore event will be assessed by the observers of the FIA, the world governing body of motorsports. In the Asia-Pacific region, Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Japan, China and Thailand are already the part of the rally circuit. Boosted by Team MRF's success in the Asia Pacific region this season, the tyre manufacturer has decided to focus on rally events in India. With the kind of terrain available in the country, it makes sense to promote rallies than racing on tarmac road In the Bangalore rally, the MAI has a target of getting participation of 20 cars from abroad. "APRC is the first step. If we do it well, on the organisational front, World rally championship wouldn't be too far,'' Mr. Hoosein said. Besides the rally championship, the MRF, under the aegis of the MAI, will launch MRF Formulae Mondiale championship 2002, a three-round Asian Zone karting championship. The karting events will be held in Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore later this year. For the Formulae Mondiale championship, MRF will import 16 karts with the CIK specifications. CIK is the Karting Commission of the FIA.
