Sonia writes to PM again

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 13. The Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, today wrote to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, urging him to review relief and rehabilitation work in the violence-hit areas of Gujarat, and direct the Central and State Governments to take all measures to address the needs of those living in the camps before monsoon sets in.

Written exactly a fortnight after she wrote to Mr. Vajpayee, seeking his intervention in dissuading the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, from undertaking the gaurav rath yatra, today's letter said she was "once again constrained" to write to him on the relief and rehabilitation.

Quoting State Government reports on the need to close the remaining camps "when the situation does not warrant their closure'', she said "the victims residing at the camps — most of whom are poor, urgently in need of continued food rations, and shelter during monsoons and fair compensation''.

About compensation paid till date, she said it was inadequate and had reached only a small percentage of the victims.
