Antony group braces up for fight

By Girish Menon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 16. After a rather long period of inactivity, the Antony faction has suddenly become active. The faction leaders have made it clear that they viewed the KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan's statement attacking the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, seriously and would not hesitate to react to it strongly.

Sources in the Antony faction said that there was no justification in Mr. Muraleedharan's strong reaction against Mr. Antony, who did not support his attempts to renege an earlier agreement on handing over the Youth Congress presidentship to the Third Group in the Congress. The needle of the attacks by the Antony faction leaders was directed at Mr. Muraleedharan.

The sources said the Chief Minister and the PCC president had impeccable relations, which had never been witnessed whenever the party came to power. This kind of unity was never witnessed even during the tenure of Pattom Thanu Pillai as the Chief Minister, with Sanker as the Deputy Chief Minister and the late C. K. Govindan Nair as the KPCC president.

The party was rarely consulted on administrative affairs and this trend continued even while Mr. Karunakaran was the Chief Minister. Mr. Antony, who was the KPCC president at that time, was not informed about several administrative matters, but he never complained.

The trend continued even when Mr. Vayalar Ravi was the KPCC president. Mr. Antony had not given any chance for this kind of complaint during his tenure as the Chief Minister so far. He has always put party unity ahead of him even if it meant sidelining his own supporters and creating disaffection among them.

They said that several Karunakaran supporters were accommodated in various committees and bodies, but Mr. Antony did not oppose it whatsoever. The sources said that it had been agreed in the presence of the then AICC general Secretary, Ghulam Nabi Azad, that the Youth Congress presidentship should go to the Third Group.

Mr. Muraleedharan himself had agreed to this proposal. Mr. Muraleedharan was opposed to Anil Kumar being made the YC State president because he belonged to Kozhikkode. At one stage, the high command had selected V. P. Sajeendaran as the fittest candidate for the job.

Mr. Muraleedharan himself had supported the move to sideline Mr. Anil Kumar. But it was Mr. Antony who had stood steadfast by the earlier agreement, as a result of which Mr. Sajeendran did not get the job.

Mr. Muraleedharan in fact made attempts to make Sreekantan the All India general secretary of the Youth Congress. Mr. Sreekantan had contested as a rebel candidate from Shoranur Municipality during the last local bodies election and was suspended from the party on this issue, the sources said and added that the Antony faction had not complained to the High Command against this, even though it was well known that there were differences in the Karunakaran camp on his appointment.

Mr Muraleedharan had unleashed his attack against Mr. Antony because he wanted to prevent these differences from spilling out. The sources said that the Antony faction would abide by whatever decisions the High Command may take.

Reacting to the Youth Congress issue, Benny Behanan, KPCC general secretary, said that Mr. Antony's position should be viewed in the context of his political morality. He said that the Karunakaran faction had got a better deal in the revamp process.

He said that all factions in the party were bound to accept the decisions of the High Command.
