IMFL retailers throng court to seek stay

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JULY 17 . The Madras High Court has directed retail IMFL (Indian-made Foreign Liquor) merchants, who obtained an interim stay of the government move to terminate their vending permits, to submit their renewal licence and fee to the Government by 5.45 p.m. on July 19.

Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla, who stayed the GO for three months on Tuesday, also said similar writ petitions filed up to Thursday evening alone would be considered for any interim relief.

Meanwhile, with just a day left for filing petitions challenging the GO, there was a huge rush in the filing section of the High Court. The number of applications having breached the 2,000-mark already, the section expects at least 2,000 more applications by Thursday evening. Many advocates, finding it difficult to cope with the slew of requests from permit-holders, were shuttling between the clients and the filing section to get their petitions numbered.

The Government, on its part, today filed an appeal against the interim stay.
