The Vice-Chancellor, E. Balaguruswamy, who greeted Dr. Kalam over telephone, on his election as the nation's 12th President, told The Hindu that the University immensely benefited by the presence of Dr. Kalam as well his research initiatives in three ``socially relevant'' areas. Dr. Kalam was involved in establishing a Brain Research Centre to help mentally challenged children to reach near-normal life with convergence technologies; in preserving and transforming traditional knowledge available in ancient palm leaves into digital media for permanent storage; and in indigenous development of cochlear implant to benefit the children with profound sensory neural and hearing loss, using electronics and information technology. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the President-elect was keen that the University continue the research. ``He wanted us to ensure that his absence did not stop the project. We told him that we could show our respect to his services only by continuing from where he left...as these are socially relevant and beneficial research areas.'' Dr. Kalam had delivered over 50 lectures to the university students and research scholars and had worked untiringly for the past six months from the University's Ramanujan Institute of Computing. Prof. Balagurusamy said ``Dr. Kalam is also keen to help us, continue research which he led, subject to protocol conditions....and to assist us in the task even while holding the President's office. He is prepared to provide consultancy and if possible, our research teams can visit him to take his guidance.''.
