`Fisheries development to become people's movement'

By Our Staff Reporter

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, addressing a meeting after inaugurating a project to conserve marine life in the Gulf of Mannar, in Ramanathapuram on Thursday.

Ramanathapuram July 18. Fisheries development would be made a people's movement and sea ranching programmes launched to stem the decline in fish population in Tamil Nadu waters, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, said today.

Laying the foundation stone for a Rs. 140-crore project to conserve marine life in the Gulf of Mannar here, the Chief Minister said sea ranching would enhance marine resources and fishermen's income.

Unveiling a slew of plans for developing the water-starved Ramanathapuram, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the district once known as the "land of turmoil" had become a land of peace. Those who instigated violence disappeared because of stern government action. The people's commitment to peace was evident from the lesson they taught those who sowed the seeds of hatred by creating caste clashes in the last Assembly elections, she said.

The Government was keen on finding an early solution to two problems: water shortage and attacks on fishermen by Sri Lankan navy personnel.

The Government would implement a Rs. 850-crore Ramanathapuram Bulk Water Supply project, bringing Cauvery water. An "integrated irrigation tanks desilting scheme", at a cost of Rs. 55 crores, would be implemented.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also inaugurated a bird centre at the Gulf of Mannar for educational research, set up by the M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation for promoting research on rare birds.
