England restricts New Zealand

By Our Special Correspondent

CHESTER-LE STREET JULY 20. World champion New Zealand was restricted to 161 by England in the final of the triangular series at the Riverside ground here on Saturday.

On a bright sunny morning, it was a good decision by England to bowl first, and the bowlers responded well to take two Kiwi wickets without any score on the board. There was not much of a crowd at the Riverside ground to appreciate the effort though.

The in-form Kiwi captain Emily Drumm was also out for 15, and New Zealand was struggling at 21 for three when Kate Pulford (17) combined with Haidee Tiffen to pull the team out, as the ball came nicely on to the bat on the well-rolled pitch.

The 21-year-old Kate went on to score 55 off 106 balls with three fours. She picked Isa Guha and Laura Newton for her boundaries. In fact, she and Haidee hit 14 runs in the 15th over off Laura Newton, to wrest the initiative for New Zealand, after the early struggle.

The Kiwi women, however, were keen to play their strokes but executed a few loose ones, in literally playing into the hands of the English women, after looking set to collar the bowling. The English fielding was sharp.

Aimee Mason (20), Sara McGlashan (19) and Fiona Fraser (14) added useful runs to help New Zealand set up a fighting total. There was a brief shower, but that gave way to sunshine, after robbing 37 minutes of play. It did not result in the reduction of the overs.

More than anyone else, the 19-year-old wicket-keeper Mandie Goldiman stood out for England, as she took three catches apart from effecting a stumping off the bowling of medium-pacer Clare Taylor.

Isa Guha, who came in for the injured English opening bowler Lucy Pearson, made a mark with three for 28. Laura Spragg and Clare Taylor bagged two wickets apiece, while Clare Connor and Laura Harper bowled their spin effectively in claiming a wicket apiece.

The scores: New Zealand 161 in 48.5 overs (Kate Pulford 55, Isa Guha three for 28).
