Probe into J&K killings: APHC seeks U.N. intervention

SRINAGAR JULY 21. The All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has sought the intervention of the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and heads of governments in identifying the "gunmen'' who have been responsible for massacres such as the one in Qasim Nagar on July 13.

In a letter faxed to Dr. Annan, the heads of governments in United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, Japan, the European Union and the Amnesty International, the APHC chairman, Abdul Gani Bhat, has said "consequent upon mass killings of innocent men and women and children yet again at Qasim Nagar in Jammu in cold blood, the APHC has decided a couple of days ago to organise a protest march with a view to emphasising the need at the global level to unmask the ugly criminals involved in the carnage."

"Needless to say that our political forum engaged in a just and legitimate freedom struggle in accordance with the International law, the U.N. Security Council resolutions as well as pledges given to us by the Indian leadership, has been frantically demanding an inquiry by an international agency on mass killings involving Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs in Kashmir by what the Government calls unidentified gunmen," Prof. Bhat said.

Further, "it is interesting to note that a purposefully belated admission by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister on the floor of the Assembly that the Pathribal incident unmistakably linked with Chattisinghpora carnage was the handiwork not certainly of freedom lovers, but men from security forces. We feel constrained to bring home to your excellency that the innocent blood is shed in J&K at the State-level with a view to apportioning blame on freedom lovers, obviously to bring infamy and disrepute to whole movement.''

Asking for their intervention he says "now is the time that the sensible people arise above ordinary political consideration and address the issue which is cause of violence and bloodshed in the interest of principles of justice and the values of civilised life and above everything else a brighter future for the entire people of region.''
