Archery
Senior National individual champion Shivnath Nagasia, representing Andhra Pradesh and Kezieguino Thanuo of Jharkhand topped the selections in the men's and women's sections respectively. The Archery Association of India (AAI) invited archers who had shot 1200 points and above in a single FITA round in any recognised meet for the trials. The field had 17 boys and eight girls. At the end of the first day after a single FITA round competition, only seven boys and three girls remained in fray having shot 1200 points and above. The final selection was made after the shortlisted archers shot arrows over 70m distance. Nagasia, who slumped into bad form after winning the National title at Cossipore near Kolkata last year, finished on top with 1261 points followed by Rakesh of Uttar Pradesh with 1243. Rakesh had finished second in the junior Nationals held at Delhi earlier this year. Raj Kumar of Army Sports Institute came third with a total of 1235 and Kapil of UP completed the team placing fourth with 1224. Kapil was third at the Junior Nationals.# The three girls who made it to the team were from the Tata Archery Academy, Jamshedpur (Jharkhand). Kezieguino accumulated 1206 points to stand first followed by Bansaralin Dhar with 1204 and rookie Yazneen S. Rana with 1127. Yazneen had a score of 1204 in the single FITA round and was included though she shot below 1200 in the final trial. The team coach and manager would be decided later. The newly elected AAI secretary, Mr. Anil Kamineni of AP, found the occasion fit to felicitate two of the country leading archers, Satyadev Prasad of UP and Chekrevolu Swuro of Jharkhand, who did well in the second Grand Prix meet held at Chongzhou in China late last month. Satyadev won a bronze medal in the Olympic round individual event and helped the Indian team win the team gold along with veteran Limba Ram and Acharya Vedkumar. Satyadev stood first in the single FITA round with a score of 1314. He was presented with a 14 inch Thomson colour TV set. Chekrevolu too shot a score of 1300 to stand fourth overall and lost in the bronze medal match narrowly in the GP meet. In appreciation of her showing she was presented with a cooker. Meanwhile, it was confirmed by the AAI that Satyadev Prasad and Limba Ram were ranked first and second for the Busan Asian Games team. Similarly, Dola Banerjee and Chekrevolu were retained in the women's section. It was clarified that the ladies' team would consist of these two women. The men's team would have two more members from among four shortlisted. They were Muniram Tirkey and Rajesh Hansdak, both of Army, Acharya Vedkumar of Ordnance Factories SCB and Kailash Sharma of UP. The two qualifiers would be spotted after a three-day trial beginning here on August 2. The squad: Boys: Shivnath Nagasia (AP), Rakesh (UP), Raj Kumar (ASI) and Kapil (UP). Girls: Kezieguino Thanuo, Bansaralin Dhar and Yazneen S. Rana (all Jharkhand).
