Kulft betters heptathlon mark

KINGSTON JULY 21. Carolina Kluft of Sweden bettered a 19-year-old world junior heptathlon record on the penultimate day of the ninth World junior athletics championships here on Saturday.

Carolina talled 6470 points, bettering the old record by five points.

The old mark, set in the Austrian town of Schwechat, on August 28, 1983, stood in the name of GDR's Sibylle Thielle. Carolina had a personal best of 6272 points going into these championships.

The sheer superiority of the Swedish girl, who successfully defended her title, was evident in the score of 5727 that the second-placed Kazakh girl, Olga Alekseyeva compiled.

Croatia had a profitable day as its athletes won the golds in women's high jump and hammer, to add to the men's shot put gold won earlier, while Kenya, expectedly, made it a one-two in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
