Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva (right) congratulates Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya on his century on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Colombo on Monday. De Silva scored a double century. AFP
De Silva cracked a mighty six and 24 boundaries in his 318-minute knock of 206 that helped Sri Lanka reach 541 for nine at the end of second day's play. Sri Lanka is now 380 runs ahead of Bangladesh, which was bundled out for 161 in its first innings on Sunday. De Silva shared two fruitful partnerships with Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Sanath Jayasuriya as the middle-order steadied Sri Lanka's innings after it was jolted by Bangladesh's seam bowlers in the morning session. Sangakkara smashed 12 fours to score 75 brisk runs before being run out, while skipper Jayasuriya flayed the clueless Bangladesh attack for six sixes and 13 boundaries in his 214-ball knock of 145 to seize control of the match. Joining Sangakkara at the score of 56 for three, De Silva unleashed his wide range of strokes to reach his half-century in 63 balls. De Silva and Sangakkara put on 150 runs for the fourth wicket that took Sri Lanka past Bangladesh's score. Captain Jayasuriya and De Silva, key members of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 World Cup, delivered the knockout punch through their brisk 234-run stand for the fifth wicket that culminated when De Silva fell leg before to left-arm spinner Enamul Haq. Haq was the most successful Bangladesh bowler, claiming four wickets for 144 runs. Resuming the second day's play at 32 without loss, Sri Lanka's opener Marvan Atapattu was bowled by an inswinger from Zubair without adding to his overnight score of 20. His opening partner Russel Arnold perished trying to cut Monzurul Islam, only to be caught at point by Hannan Sarker for 25. Mahela Jayawardena was bowled by Zubair before opening his account. AP
