The victory saw Abhijit (3 points) maintain his clean slate in the tournament. He now leads alongwith GM Vladislav Borovikov of Ukraine, GM Peter Acs of Hungary, GM Henrik Teske of Germany, GM Petr Haba, Vokac Marek (both Czech Republic), GM Brynell Stellan, Parligras Mircea (both Romania) and IM Andrei Deviatkin of Russia. Half a point behind the leaders are top seed GM K. Sasikiran, GM Dibyendu Barua and double GM norm holders Sandipan Chanda and S.S. Ganguly besides 40 others. On the top board, Sasikiran's winning run was halted and he was held to a draw by International Master Arturs Neiksans of Latvia. Playing white, Neiksans opened with the king pawn and faced the Sicilian Scheveningen defence by Sasikiran. The middlegame was hard fought as Neiksans launched an early offence against Sasikiran's king to ensure a bloody battle. Sasikiran countered the attacking manoeuvres in skilled fashion and never looked in any trouble after the trade of queens on the 24th move. The pieces got exchanged at regular intervals thereafter and the peace treaty was signed in 51 moves. Abhijit outclassed Hagarova from the white side of a queen pawn game. Playing black, Hagarova found herself in a Tarrasch defence by transposition from an orthodox queen pawn opening and reeled under pressure for the major part of the game. On the 15th move Abhijit won the Queen for two pieces and the rest was a matter a routine technique. The game lasted 33 moves. Sandipan Chanda accounted for Lindberg Bengt of Sweden from the white side of a Sicilian defence game. Bengt chose the Taimanov variation but could not keep pace with Sandipan's accuracy right till the end. Sandipan won the marathon duel that lasted till the 77th move.
