Konguvel starts favourite

Chennai July 22. Former national champion, International Master Ponnuswamy Konguvel of ONGC, Chennai, will be the favourite in the second Adyar Times Millennium FIDE-rated Open chess tournament, which is to be held at the Vidya Vinaya Vinoda School in Besant Nagar from Tuesday.

Scheduling the event back to back with that of the Avadi FIDE-rated Open, and being part of the five-event tour of Tamil Nadu, most entries from outstation states have been retained. Organisers have confirmed 121 entries and it could be a dozen more by the time the first move of round one is made at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Besides Konguvel, the second seed below him is former National `B' champion R. Balasubramaniam of ICF. Also, Rajaram Laxman, winner of the Avadi Open will be looking for his second successive title and playing without a break.

With a first prize of Rs. 12,000, 12 prizes are in the table totalling Rs. 35,000. There are also special prizes for best performers in under-12, 14 and 16 age categories. The sponsor is the neighbourhood weekly newspaper Adyar Times and the organiser is Tamil Nadu Chess Association. There will be nine rounds and the event runs from July 23 to 29 with two rounds scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday.

This is the second edition of the event. B.T. Muralikrishnan of Southern Railways was the winner of the inaugural edition last year when it was held bang opposite the residence of Viswanathan Anand in Chennai's Besant Nagar.

Muralikrishnan will be looking forward to retain his title while Konguvel the experienced campaigner will have to prove form to win ahead of the city's fast growing bunch of talented youngsters. — Our Chess Correspondent.
