My actions have PM's approval, says Mayawati

By J.P. Shukla

LUCKNOW JULY 24. Giving a new twist to BSP-BJP relations, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, today invoked the approval of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to all her actions and slammed the State BJP leaders, who have been trying to corner her on important public issues.

Talking to newspersons here, Ms. Mayawati referred to various statements of the State BJP chief, Vinay Katiyar, the party general secretary and former Chief Minister, Rajnath Singh, and the Minister for Urban Development, Lalji Tandon, who had made demands such as declaration of the entire State as drought-affected and free book distribution to school children belonging to all social groups. She said that she had talked to Mr. Vajpayee, and the latter had advised her to strictly go by the rule-book and not to bother about anything else.

Ms. Mayawati said she had come to learn from newspaper reports that Mr. Katiyar and Mr. Singh had demanded that the entire State be declared-drought hit.

She said Mr. Vajpayee had told her that rules should be followed and no area could be declared drought-affected in an arbitrary manner.
