Centre fixes post-retirement benefits of judges

NEW DELHI JULY 24. The Centre has fixed a maximum amount of Rs. 1.98 lakhs pension per annum for retired Chief Justices of India and Rs. 1.80 lakhs per annum for retired judges of the Supreme Court with effect from January 1, 1996.

According to an official press release, besides pension, a maximum of Rs. 3.50 lakhs has been provided for death-cum-retirement gratuity for retired CJIs and judges of the apex court.

The pension for retired Chief Justices of High Courts is Rs. 1.80 lakhs per annum and retired judges, Rs. 1.56 lakhs.

As for family pension, 60 per cent of the pension sanctioned for retired judges and CJIs of the apex court and High Courts will be provided for the first seven years of retirement or death or up to 65 years of age and thereafter 30 per cent of the sanctioned pension.

Commutation of pension at the rate of 50 per cent of the gross pension and leave encashment of 300 days of leave on full allowances have been allowed with effect from July 1, 1997.

They have also been granted Central Government Health Scheme facilities in addition to any other facility extended by the respective State Governments.
