Alexander wins RS seat

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI July 25. The former Maharashtra Governor, P. C. Alexander, was today elected with a massive majority to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra, bagging all votes from the Nationalist Congress Party, the Shiv Sena, the BJP and most independents. The Congress(I), though it did not issue a whip in favour of another Independent, Suresh Keswani, had orally instructed its MLAs to "vote against Dr. Alexander.''

Dr. Alexander got 201 votes and Mr. Keswani, a former Air India Director, 71.

The Congress(I)'s own strength is 74 in the Assembly and of the whole lot, four members cast invalid votes and six were absent, some being abroad.
