Pilgrim rush continues

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU JULY 31. Unfazed by the attack on Amarnath pilgrims on Tuesday, the 12th batch of 3,083 pilgrims, including 384 women and 51 children, headed for the `yatra' in 169 vehicles from the MAM stadium here today. Till now, 67,242 people have worshipped at the holy cave.

Tuesday's grenade attack by militants, which killed two persons, has not deterred the pilgrims camping at the MAM stadium. As Ravi Kumar from Patna says:

"The militants' attack has only emboldened our resolve to go on the `yatra'."

The demand for registrations is growing among the locals and other pilgrims who have come from other parts without obtaining advance registration.

Intelligence sources told The Hindu today that security had been further tightened along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and at all halting places.

The `yatra', which starts from MAM, is escorted by CRPF vehicles and security at the highway is looked after by the Rashtriya Rifles. The Jawahar tunnel, which divides Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley, is jointly looked after by the Indo-Tibetan Battalion Police and the Border Security Force.
