India's weight-lifter, Satheesha Rai, who finished third in the snatch category, 77 kg. division, at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday. He then went on to win the clean and jerk to take the overall title. India has recorded its best ever show in any international event with a rich haul of 44 medals.
The 31-year-old bank officer from Bangalore, Satheesha had to settle for the bronze in snatch with a lift of 142.5 kg, but went on to grab the gold in clean and jerk with a 175 kg lift, and the overall gold with a total of 317.5 kg. Incidentally, Satheesha had won the snatch gold the last time in Kuala Lumpur four years with a lift of 147.5. It was Australian Damian Brown's turn to hoist that weight this time for the gold. The Aussie, however, crashed out of the competition later as he `no weighted' at 162.5 kg in clean and jerk. Dave Morgan of Wales swept all the three silver medals, and beat Renos Doweiya of Nauru to the clean and jerk silver by eight grams of lesser body weight after the two had lifted 160 kg. The results: Men's 77 kg: 1. Satheesha Rai (142.5, 175.0; 317.5); 2. Dave Morgan (Wal) (145, 160; 305); 3. Renos Doweiya (Nru) (130, 160; 290).
