Letters to the Editor
Sir, While it cannot be doubted that today Kashmir is regarded as a flashpoint in the South Asian region, thanks to an almost inevitable war between India and Pakistan what is ignored is the role of Pakistan-based jehadi groups consisting mainly of foreign mercenaries, who have nothing to do with the interests of the people of Kashmir. Without doubt, this has the official patronage of the Pakistani establishment. As for free and fair polls in Kashmir, the international community can count on our media and strong public opinion in identifying any lapses. Considering the new warmth in the relations between India and the U.S., it would be unfortunate if ambiguous statements like the ones made by the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, emerge from official quarters which do not take care of the ground realities.
