Conspiracy to kill me: Mayawati

LUCKNOW AUG. 3. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, said today that certain ``notorious mafia dons'' had hatched a conspiracy to assassinate her and asked the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to upgrade her security.

At a press conference convened on the completion of her three months in office, she said: ``we have definite information that the notorious mafia dons, Ateeque Ahmed and Brijesh Singh, have hatched a conspiracy in collusion with my arch political rivals to eliminate me,''

Ms. Mayawati, who already has `Z-plus' security, said she had written to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, L.K. Advani, requesting them to review her security cover in view of the new threat perception to her life and also get the matter investigated by Central agencies.

She said the State agencies were already on the job and had been able to ascertain the "nefarious designs" of the mafia dons, who were in league with "her arch political rivals", and wanted to eliminate her. Immediately after coming to power, her Government had launched a special drive against the mafia and hardened criminals to improve the law and order situation, which, she said, had improved during her last three months' rule. — PTI
