Not a good sign

Sir, — We are horrified to hear that the Government has decided to drop the disqualification clause of two instances of criminal record for six months for a contesting candidate. The Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission to frame the disclosure rules to strengthen democracy and to help people elect the right candidate. The present move clearly shows that a bold line has been drawn between people and political parties. They can go to any extreme to safeguard their interest, throwing the public interest to the winds. There is no difference of opinion between the ruling and the Opposition parties over such matters. One such example is how the bill to hike their salary was passed in Parliament without any discussion. This is not good for democracy or to the country.

Arun Kumar Acharya,

Udupi, Karnataka
