Letters to the Editor
Sir, P.V. Indiresan's article `Engineers maligned' (July 31) highlighted the importance of the profession. Anybody who is worried at the mushrooming number of engineering colleges should only feel optimistic about what is in store for our country with so many young engineering graduates, if only their services are rightly utilised. But his opinion that the professionals do not get the respect they deserve is ill-founded. First of all, our President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was discounted by some not because he was an engineer but because they feared that he may not be adept at handling the tricks of our seasoned politicians. In the recent past no individual got so much support. Secondly, our President is more popular as a patriotic scientist than as a professional engineer. S. Natarajan, Coimbatore
