It has been decided that the Union Sports Minister, Uma Bharati, will go to head the party's Madhya Pradesh unit, and the Union Minister for Small Industries, Vasundhara Raje, will be sent to head the Rajasthan unit, top party sources said today. Although the decision was taken some time ago, its implementation was kept pending because of the ongoing parliamentary session and the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Addressing a press conference, the BJP president, Venkaiah Naidu, today said that consultations with the party's State units were going on and in some States the party would be reorganised. In response to the controversy over allotment of petrol pumps to hundreds of relatives of BJP leaders, workers and sympathisers, Mr. Naidu said he had asked the Petroleum Minister, Ram Naik, to make public the procedure for allotment and also make a statement. "We want the procedure to be completely transparent,'' he said, but could not explain how despite the setting up of "independent'' selection boards, hundreds of relatives of BJP leaders and workers were successful in getting allotments "on merit''. Office-bearers of the party, who met here today after yesterday's national council meeting, also later met the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to brief him about decisions taken. This was followed by a meeting with BJP Cabinet Ministers. Basically, the party decided to hold four zonal level meetings of top party functionaries in those States from August 27 to September 12, to be followed by State, district and block level meetings with the idea of familiarising workers at all levels with the Delhi Sankalp (Delhi Pledge) document adopted by the party at the Council session yesterday. Mr. Naidu and all five general secretaries of the party will attend all the zonal meetings. Significantly, the Gujarat unit has been excluded from the meetings as "the pledge has already been taken there'', Mr. Naidu said. Although elections have been announced for Jammu and Kashmir the State unit from there will attend the northern zone meeting. A `Gaon Chalo' (go to the village) campaign is also to be launched to cover all districts of the country, State level political conferences are to be held, discipline is to be tightened and machinery set up for better government-party coordination where the BJP is in power. Mr. Naidu also said that MPs, Ministers, executive committee members and others are to be given specific responsibilities and associated with the party's effort to popularise its programmes and reach the masses. Mr. Vajpayee gave his approval today to Mr. Naidu's request that Ministers should visit the party office regularly and devote time for party work. Mr. Naidu also emphasised that soon the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, would begin visiting the party office once a week.
