Indian students shine in Olympiads

MUMBAI AUG. 5. India has done well for itself in the several Olympiads held worldwide this academic year, bagging not less than four gold, nine silver and half a dozen bronze medals.

Significantly, each of the 19 members of the different squads has won a medal.

This, according to official agencies dealing with the Olympiads, is on a par with the performance "for the past many years.'' Only in Biology was the gold missed.

The subject-wise events were held in Glasgow in the United Kingdom, Riga in Latvia, Groningen in the Netherlands and Bali in Indonesia.

According to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education here which organises the Olympiad programme in India and helps in selecting and training students for participation in the event, a significant achievement this year was the feat of Sumit Kumar of Hisar, Haryana, who was placed first in the Chemistry Experimental Test, a point never reached by an Indian so far.

Releasing the list of winners, HBCSE said 80 countries participated in the Mathematical Olympiad in Glasgow.

As many as 226 students from 57 countries participated in the Chemistry Olympiad in Groningen. From 41 countries, 155 students came to Riga for the Biology Olympiad and 296 students from 67 countries converged at Bali for the Physics Olympiad. at Bali.

The Indian winners are: Chemistry: Sumit Kumar (Hisar, Haryana) and Salim Dewani (Mumbai) — gold; Arjun Krishnan (Chennai) and Shriram Shivaraman) — bronze. India ranked eighth in terms of medals tally.

Mathematics: Nikhil A. Salve (Pune) — gold; Sucharit Sarkar and Swarnednu Datta (both Kolkata) and Bhaskara Aditya (Hyderabad) — all silver; Shubhangi Saraf and Tanmay N. Deshpande (both Pune) — bronze.

Physics: Ravishankar Sundararaman (Mumbai) — gold, Sundeep B. (Bangalore), Hirakendu Das (Hyderabad), Kushal Mukherjee (Bangalore) and Shantanu Bharadwaj( Mathura) — all silver.

Biology: Hrishikesh Bhattacharya (Kolkata) and Siddhartha Sarkar (Jaipur) — silver; Ashish Aggarwal (Patiala) and Sruti Srinivasan (Chennai) — both bronze.
