Haryana IG spotted at party?

By Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI AUG. 5. While the Delhi police are in "hot pursuit'' of R. K. Sharma, prime accused in the murder of the Indian Express correspondent, Shivani Bhatnagar, he was allegedly spotted at a party attended by several VVIPs and politicians here on Sunday night.

The party was organised by a senior lawyer at his residence. The Inspector-General (Prisons), Haryana, who has been evading arrest, was seen in the company of high-profile people, sources said. Sharma stayed at the party till midnight and left for an unknown destination.

However, the Delhi police, who have been sending teams to many places, said they had no information about his presence in the city.

Meanwhile, several Crime Branch plainclothesmen deployed at the Karkardooma courts and in the Delhi High Court kept waiting for Sharma to show up. Sharma was expected to surrender before the court or apply for anticipatory bail.

The Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, U. K. Katna, said security at airports across the country had been tightened. Sharma has applied for a transit bail at a Panchkula court through his lawyer. Police said they would challenge the application there.

Meanwhile, the Karkardooma court rejected the application of another accused, Sri Bhagwan, who had pleaded against his 14-day remand. Police submitted that Sri Bhagwan presented himself before them on July 23 after it was found that his cell phone had been used while hatching the conspiracy to murder Shivani. He was again asked to appear on July 25, but went missing. Police said they arrested him near his restaurant in Gurgaon on July 30.
