The 17th century bronze idol of Lord Krishna, and puja articles found near Madurai.
According to the curator of the Madurai Government Museum, P.Sam Sathiaraj, the two-foot Lord Krishna was in a dancing posture with his left leg resting on the `padmasana'. A ball of butter was seen in his right hand whereas his left hand was found stretched out. A beautifully ornamented crown was seen on His head. The Lord's ears were adorned with `patrakundalas' and `makarakundalas.' His chest was covered with a `chhannavira', an ornament worn by warriors. On His right chest, the `srivatsa' mark could be noticed. The bronze pooja ware included a decorated `yali' stand, beautiful lamp stands, tripods, two bronze bells, an incense burner, a round bronze bowl and a pair of Vishnu feet. The `yali' decoration on the vase and lamp stands was quite interesting. The mythical bird, `Hamsa' and a peacock were found on the lamp stands. The `chakra' found on the handle of the bell and the `sankha' and `chakra' marks found on the Vishnu feet were quite exquisite. The pieces would be displayed in the museum for public view after cleaning, the curator added.
