DMK chief calls off plan to open gruel centre

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Aug. 5. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today cited AIADMK decision to organise a mass feeding programme ``at the same place and at the same time'' as he had planned, as the reason for calling off the planned opening of the gruel centre at Ammayarkuppam.

``The people that I am going to do good to, should not be affected,'' Mr.Karunanidhi said. It was only natural that a few thousand DMK volunteers gather at the function site. If AIADMK Ministers also participated in another function close by, there were chances of violence between the supporters of both parties, the DMK chief said.

Addressing presspersons today, he said he had made his programme public on August 2. Immediately, the ruling party swung into action and procured sarees worth Rs. 1 crore from weaver cooperatives in the area. It had ``planned'' a function at the same place with an eye on creating law and order problem.

The party had tried explaining the situation ``from the Governor, P.S.Ramamohan Rao, to police officials,'' but there was no ``adequate response.'' The Governor had conveyed that since this involved politics, he could not intervene.

On the DPI's conclave against the misuse of provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, he said his party was of the opinion that the POTA was being misused in the State. The DMK chief said though the DPI general secretary, R. Tirumavalavan, had invited him, he told the DPI leader that the DMK would not be able to participate.

He expressed his support for the CPI (M) demand today for convening the Assembly to discuss problems caused by drought in the State.
