Former Judge acquitted

Mumbai Aug. 6. Twenty-eight months after the former judge, J.W. Singh, was arrested for allegedly committing extortion in league with the underworld, a special court today acquitted him from all the charges.

Mr. Singh was tried under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), Prevention of Corruption Act and IPC. He was suspended from judicial service and later dismissed. Police alleged he had "hired" the Pakistan-based gangster, Chhota Shakeel, to recover a sum of Rs. 40 lakhs from a chit fund operator in lieu of judicial favours.
