Sangam period potteries unearthed

A piece of Sangam period pottery with Tamil Brahmi inscription of 2nd century BC, recently unearthed by the Archaeology department at Mangudi in Tirunelveli district.

CHENNAI Aug. 7. The State Archaeology Department has unearthed Sangam period potteries like black and red ware, terracotta spout beads and red ware from Nayakar Punchai in Mangudi village in Tirunelveli district recently.

A copper coin of the early Nayak period was also found. A potsherd with a Tamil Brahmi inscription was unearthed at a depth of 1.08 metres. It was on an earthen plate broken into three pieces. Fourteen letters were found inscribed on the base of the plate in a circular shape. As the other portions were missing, the full message could not be read. The plate was donated by ``Aadhan eiyanai of kurumangalam''. Palaeographically, these letters could be assigned to the second century B.C, according to an official press release.
