Strategy after merger: Cong.

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI AUG. 7. The Congress will chalk out a strategy for future course of action after the merger of the TMC with it here on August 14, according to the AICC secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu, Ramesh Chennithala.

Addressing presspersons after inspecting two probable venues for the August 14 meeting (the Tamukkam Ground and the Madurai Medical College Ground), Mr. Chennithala said the Congress would emerge as a major political force in Tamil Nadu after the merger. The union of the TMC with the Congress had generated a ``new confidence'' among the public and party workers. Mr. Chennithala was confident that the party would emerge stronger with the ``homecoming'' of Congressmen.

However, when questioned about efforts to bring in the Congress Democratic Forum of the former Union Minister, P. Chidambaram, the AICC secretary replied, ``we have not taken any step.''

He did not attach any significance to the meeting of the Congress leader, Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthy, with the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, ``as in a democracy, a public representative had a right to meet the Chief Minister when there was an issue or a problem.''

Even after the announcement of the TMC president, G. K. Vasan, that the Tamukkam Ground will be the venue for the merger function, Mr. Chennithala inspected the MMC ground, adding to the speculation that there would be another change of venue.

Earlier, the TMC had opted for the Race Course ground for the public meeting. Mr. Chennithala said the function could not be held at the Race Course as they were told that a Government order prohibited conduct of non-sporting events in the venue.
