Central Revenue's N. Ravichandran makes a backhand return against Pramod Agarwal of State Bank of Indore in the men's event.
The matches involving Petroleum were deferred to Thursday since its players could not reach the Capital from Manchester on Tuesday night, as per schedule. Having done National duty in the Commonwealth Games, the Petroleum players are now expected to reach here late on Wednesday. As a result, the Petroleum men will be required to play three league matches and the quarterfinal on Thursday. Likewise, the women will have to play four matches in the six-team league before facing Railways in the virtual final on Friday afternoon. Railways did not miss the services of Saurav Chakraborty and blanked Oriental Insurance, Indian Bank and Food Corporation of India to top Group `A'. FCI was the second team in the group and thus made the knockout phase. In this four-team group, Indian Bank was just a game away from suffering the ignominy of finishing last before J. Selvakumar pulled off the decider in the third `rubber' against Sharad Grover. Thereafter, V. Vasu and Ramesh Babu won their matches with varying degrees of difficulty to complete a 3-2 victory over Oriental Insurance. Defence Accounts confirmed its place along with Petroleum in Group `B' after getting the better of Electricity Board and Coal India. Petroleum is expected to head this group on Thursday. Banks Sports Board, served well by Deepak Thakural, Jignesh Jaiswal and Vineet Chopra, maintained an all-win record like Central Revenue and made sure of a place in the last eight from Group `C'. In this group, Postal was the last minute addition, just as State Bank of India was added to Group `D'. In group `D', Life Insurance Corporation and Major Ports kept winning to stay firmly on course filling the last-eight slots. In the women's round-robin matches, Railways overcome a shaky start against LIC before racing away to a 3-1 victory. LIC's T. Pradeepa, formerly with Indian Airlines, defeated Vishakha Bijoy 11-3, 11-1, 11-8 to give her team a dream start. Thereafter, much depended on Anindita Chakraborty and she did not let Railways down. She made light of the loss of the second game to down Avanti Sinha 11-7, 14-16, 11-8, 13-11. Mamta Prabhu took care of Sarojini Daundiyal 11-8, 12-10, 11-3 before Anindita returned to stop Pradeepa 11-1, 6-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-5 in a thriller.
