Probe ordered into `sati'

Bhopal Aug. 7. The Madhya Pradesh Government today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the "sati" — self-immolation by a woman on the funeral pyre of the husband — committed by a 65-year-old woman, Kuttu Bai, in Tamali Patna village of Panna district on Tuesday.

In a statement, the State Home Minister, Mahendra Boudh, told the Legislative Assembly that the woman, who died of burns, was forced to enter the funeral pyre of her husband, Mallu Nai.

He said that on getting information about the possibility of the woman planning sati, two police personnel from Saleha police station reached Tamoli Patna and found a crowd of 1,000 near the funeral pyre. These people stoned the police officials injuring them, he said and added that 15 persons had been arrested.

The Leader of the Opposition, Gauri Shanker Shejwar, said the serious incident deserved to be discussed under an adjournment motion and the suggestion was accepted by the Speaker, Sriniwas Tiwari, who announced that it would be taken up tomorrow.
