Carding a superb five under 67, Yusuf Ali moved alongside Gaurav Ghei and Jyoti Randhawa to be the joint leader after the second round. Yusuf Ali had a lean time after The Hindu Open last year at Chennai, his last title victory. After a level par on the first day, Yusuf Ali got off to a flier in the second round. A birdie on the first hole was quickly annulled by a bogey on the third but after that Yusuf Ali was in tremendous form. A birdie on the fifth made him grow in confidence and on the eighth a 30-foot putt rolled in giving him a big boost. Birdies followed on the 12th, 13th and 16th. "The wind was again making it tough today but I had a very good day. My putting especially fell into place and with two rounds still to go the tournament is quite open. I hope to carry on with the good form till the final round,'' Yusuf remarked. Jyoti Randhawa improved on his first day's score to return a three under 69 for the day and stay in the lead. "I was more focussed today and kept my concentration going,'' Jyoti said. A shaky start where he was uncomfortable on the first two holes was quickly overcome and Jyoti, teeing off from the 10th scored a 15-foot birdie on the 12th. On the back nine Jyoti notched up birdies on the second from 18 feet and easier birdies on the third and eighth. Jyoti slipped up on the sixth where he three putted for a bogey and managed to save a par on the fifth where he again three putted. "My putting was better on the second round but it's still pretty average,'' Jyoti felt. Gaurav Ghei, the other overnight leader, played solid stuff on the second day. Gaurav hit the ball well but marred his card missing a few makeable putts. Finding the greens a bit tricky Gaurav opened with a birdie on the fourth and followed up with similar scores on the ninth, 14th and 18th. His worst hole was the sixth where he went into the trees and consequently logged a bogey. Indrajit Bhalotia and Vijay Kumar dropped positions from the first round. While Vijay Kumar was just a stroke behind the leaders scoring two under 70 for the day, Indrajit Bhalotia finished with four over 76 to slip to eighth. David D'Souza was 13 strokes ahead of his nearest rival Prem Bhatia in the amateur section. David came up with a one over 73 for the day with four birdies and one eagle on the 14th but also had five bogeys and a double bogey to finish with 73 for the day. The cut was applied at nine over 153 with 55 professionals and five amateurs qualifying for the final two rounds. The results: 1. Yusuf Ali (72, 67), Gaurav Ghei (70, 69), Jyoti Randhawa (70, 69) 139 each; 2. Vijay Kumar (70, 70) 140; 3. Mukesh Kumar (72, 69) 141; 4. Minky P. Barbora (72, 70) 142; 5. Ashok Kumar (71, 72), C. Muniyappa (71, 72) 143; 6. Arjun Singh (74, 70), Shiv Prakash (72, 72) 144 each; 7. Rahul Ganapathy (71, 74) 145. Amateurs: 1. David D'Souza (78, 73) 151; 2. Prem Bhatia (81, 83) 164; 3 Arjun Ramesh (81, 85) 166; 4. Sripad Renu (84, 87) 171; 5. Rohan Puri (82,89) 171.
